Best Places to Bring Your Dog on the Redwood Coast
Thinking of bringing your dog on your trip to Humboldt? We think you should! Empty beaches, pet friendly patios, and forest trails make Humboldt a great place to explore with your furry friend.
Our own adventure dogs, Kea and Otto, running on Clam Beach, looking north towards Moonstone Beach and Trinidad Head.
These are our top dog friendly spots to check out.
Arcata Community Forest
Just minutes from the Arcata Plaza, is a local gem loved by both residents and visitors. This lush redwood forest features an extensive network of trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and casual strolls beneath towering trees.
The open lawn near the entrance is ideal for a picnic or a game of fetch, and the brand-new playground makes it a great stop for families, too. Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs after exploring downtown or spend an afternoon wandering the shaded trails, Arcata Community Forest offers the perfect mix of nature and community charm.
Trinidad State Park
This one’s our personal favorite! We love that Trinidad State Park offers the best of both worlds: peaceful forest trails and stunning beach access. Explore the trails that wind through a lush coastal conifer forest, that open up to dramatic ocean views.
Park in the lot on Stagecoach Road, where you can head straight down to Trinidad State Beach or take the forested trail to College Cove, with the option to continue on to Elk Head for sweeping coastal vistas. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick stroll or a half-day adventure, this park delivers beauty and variety around every corner.
Tip: After your hike, head over to the Beach Comber Cafe to relax at their dog friendly patio and enjoy a bite to eat.
Moonstone Beach
If your dog loves to splash in the surf, chase a ball, and make new friends, Moonstone Beach is the perfect spot! Nestled between the cliffs to the north and the Little River to the south, this scenic beach feels tucked away yet full of life. It’s a favorite among locals for its mix of mellow waves, soft sand, and a friendly, social vibe that both dogs and their humans enjoy.
At low tide, you can often skip across Little River to extend the walk along Clam Beach just beyond. Whether you’re here for a quick play session or a full afternoon of seaside adventure, Moonstone Beach is a must-visit for dog lovers.
Clam Beach County Park
If your dog loves to run, Clam Beach is the perfect spot! This expansive stretch of sand offers tons of room for off-leash play and long walks. Its wide shoreline means you don’t have to worry about timing your visit around the tides. Compared to other beaches in the area, Clam Beach tends be quieter and more relaxed, making it ideal for visitors (and dogs) who prefer a little extra space.
For the best access, park in the north lot—it’s the second parking area coming from US 101 North. Follow the short path out to the beach, where you can choose your adventure: turn right (north) for a scenic 1.25 mile stroll toward Little River and Moonstone Beach, or head left (south) for about 1.5 miles to the mouth of the Mad River. Either direction promises wildlife, wide-open views, and one very happy dog.
Hiller Park
Staying near McKinleyville? Dont miss Hiller Park Dog Park, a local favorite where pups can roam off-leash and explore scenic trails overlooking the Mad River. The park offers wide open spaces, shaded paths, and plenty of room for your dog to run, sniff, and socialize. It’s a peaceful spot to stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh air, and take in sweeping river views.
Six Rivers Brewery
There are many pet friendly patios but Six River’s Brewery is our favorite. Their pet friendly Beer Garden is fully covered and offers overhead heaters. Located at the top of the hill in McKinleyville, you’ll have a beautiful view of the Arcata Bottoms and beyond.
